The Dubai criminal court has sentenced a 25-year-old Afghan man to one year in jail to be followed by deportation for robbing bank customers.
However, the jobless convict was cleared of the charge of trying to kill an on-duty police officer, who was trying to arrest him.
The police officer testified that he was watching over banks when he identified three suspects with previous criminal records of robbing bank customers. He said once the suspects saw him, they fled. As he chased them, the convict held him from behind and tried to slit his throat with a knife.
He, however, could not do so as the officer snatched the knife from his hand and overpowered him with the help of passers-by.
