The Court of Misdemeanour in Umm Al Quwain has sentenced two brothers, both Arabs, to two months in jail on charges of trying to smuggle a cell phone into the prison.
The court also ordered each to pay a fine of Dh3,000, along with court charges.
As per court records, the case unfolded when the first suspect, who was in police custody, was admitted to the Sheikh Khalifa Hospital. The second suspect, his brother, tried to hide a cell phone in the parked prison bus so the first accused could take it later, and use it in possible escape or illegal actions.
However, the guard in-charge noticed the second suspect hiding the phone.
The panicked suspect tried to escape the scene, but the guard managed to track him down, and arrested him.
The second accused was referred to the prosecution and then the court where he admitted to having hidden the cell phone in the prison bus.
"I did this as per my brother's (first suspect's) wish," he told the court.
The court found the duo guilty and ordered them to serve two months in jail, and asked each to pay a fine of Dh3,000, along with court charges.
