Dubai - A car being driven by a woman collided with a coach of the Dubai Tramwayon Thursdaymorning. No injuries were reported in the accident.

According to an RTA official, who spoke to Khaleej Times on condition of anonymity, the incident took place near Knowledge Village. Prima facie, it looks like the woman was distracted while driving — it’s suspected that she was talking on the phone — when the accident took place. She jumped a red-light and collided with the tram coach.

The tram, which was travelling at a speed of 45kmph, could not stop in time to avoid the collision.

The woman is likely to incur hefty fines as per prevailing traffic regulations related to the Dubai Tramway operations.

The Dubai Tram, which is expected to provide accessibility and mobility within Dubai, particularly the new leisure and business districts of the emirate, stretches for a distance of 14.6km along Al Safouh Street.

Approximately 27,000 passengers will use the Dubai Tram daily in the first phase once it gets operational in November.
