Crime rate drops by 13.6% in Abu Dhabi

The crime rate in Abu Dhabi dropped by 13.6 per cent in 2013 compared with 2012 figures, thanks to massive awareness campaigns and stringent measures taken to tackle cases that could undermine security and stability, Abu Dhabi Public Prosecution data has shown.

Statistics show that cases examined by the prosecution in the emirate fell to 74,036 in 2013 from 85,685 in 2012. According to the figures, the rate of case adjudication remained high at 99.9 per cent for the sixth year running.

A breakdown of the information showed a decrease in cases related to possession and consumption of drugs by 19.3 per cent in 2013 over 2012, breach of trust cases by 17.3 per cent, bounced cheque cases by 14.1 per cent and rape cases at 7.2 per cent. Violations of municipal regulations dropped significantly by 44 per cent.

The UAE Attorney-General, Yousef Saeed Al Ibri, noted that the marked decrease in the crime rate was a result of relentless efforts made by the public prosecution within its commitment to Abu Dhabi Vision 2030.

It was also because of the series of educational and awareness campaigns conducted last year targeting wide spectrums of the local community and covering the most important cases monitored by the report.

“The Public Prosecution adopted a variety of strict measures within its strategy to handle cases that could pose a threat to security and stability of the community,” he said.
