The Federal Supreme Court has upheld an appellate court verdict that ordered a man to pay Dh5,000 fine for abusing and insulting a woman through WhatsApp messages.
According to court documents, the woman complained to authorities after the man sent her abusive and insulting messages using his mobile phone.
The woman said that she was undermined by the man's abusive and insulting messages. Prosecutors charged the man with using an electronic device to abuse the woman which is a violation of the online law.
They also demanded that the man is given a tough sentence. Both the Court of First Instance and the Appeals Court fined the man Dh5,000.
The Appeal Court judge also ordered him to be deported.
The man challenged the ruling at the UAE's top court, which has maintained earlier rulings.
The man was given a lighter sentence because the victim had withdrawn her case and pardoned the defendant.
