A domestic worker has been sentenced to one year in prison for sexually assaulting a 6-year-old schoolgirl. The 29-year-old Pakistani is believed to have taken the girl, an Indian, from her neighbours’ apartment where she was attending a party, taking advantage of the fact that she was by herself at the time.
The Court of First Instance found him guilty of sexually assaulting the girl on the terrace of the building where she lived with her parents. The defendant, who earlier denied the charge in court, will be deported after serving his prison time.
A policeman said that the incident was reported around 11.30pm on October 18, last year. “The defendant admitted to me that he molested the girl on the terrace of the building.”
The girl’s mother, a 42-year-old Indian accountant, said that she saw her daughter looking disturbed and scared shortly after the incident.
“She entered the apartment and told me to shut the door. As I asked her where she was, she recounted that the defendant took her by her hand to the terrace after gagging her.”
On the terrace, he made her touch him and performed a sexual act on her. The mother told the investigators that they had received an invitation to attend a party at their neighbours’ house. Being busy, she dressed her daughter and told her to go to the party saying that she would join her later. But few minutes later, she was surprised after her neighbour’s son went and asked about her daughter.
That was when she got consumed by fear. As she was about to go out to look for her girl, she saw the latter standing at the door and looking disturbed. She was shocked to hear about what the defendant did to her.
The verdict remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
