Be wary of the text messages or phone calls that promise fake prizes, the Abu Dhabi police have said in a fresh warning to the residents. The police warned that the SMSes sent by the scammers or phone calls made by them are meant to dupe people by extracting their bank details.
"Scammers often send text messages or make phone calls informing their targets about winning a fake prize in order to get their bank details," police pointed out in a statement.
“Do not share your confidential bank information with anyone. Protect your bank account or credit card information, passwords for online banking, personal identification numbers for ATMs, security number (CCV), or password and don’t disclose them. Bank employees will never ask you for such information.”
According to police, the scammers make phone calls or send text messages to people claiming they have won big cash prizes through their service providers. Others pretend to be bank employees and prod victims to share their personal information so their account details in the bank systems could be updated.
“Phone scams affect the community members who fall prey to scammers who use various tricks to steal their money,” said the police.
The cops also cautioned residents that communication companies in the UAE do not call their customers to inform them of winning such cash prizes.
People have been advised not to respond to unknown phone numbers, maintain the confidentiality of their personal and financial information and to report such cases to authorities immediately.
The hotline for reporting phone scammers is 2828 or Aman Service number 8002626.
