Driver gets two years jail term, pay Dh200,000 blood money

Dubai Traffic Misdemeanors Court on Monday sentenced an Asian bus driver to six months in prison and ordered to pay Dh200,000 blood money (Diyya) to the heirs of a worker.

According to court records the driver was transporting a number of workers and travelling on the Emirates Road last May. Investigations showed that the driver was tired and dozed off resulting for the bus to veer off and rammed into a vehicle parked on the side of the road.

The driver, A N, a 29 year-old Indian, was convicted of causing the death of one worker and injury to 16 others while he was transporting them on the highway last month.

The court also slapped him a fine of Dh5,000 and be deported after serving his jail term.
