A 36-year-old expat was sentenced to life in prison by the Dubai Court of First Instance on Wednesday after he was found guilty of raping his girlfriend at his flat while drunk.
The Dubai public prosecution accused the jobless Jordanian man of raping the Moroccan woman on July 28 while he was in an inebriated state. The incident was reported at the Al Rashidiya police station.
The court ordered the deportation of the defendant at the end of his 25-year prison term.
During the prosecution investigation, the complainant - a 37-year-old woman working as an assistant sales executive at a shop in a mall - said she had met the defendant there. "He proposed to me and I agreed. We had been on and off because of his drinking habits until he contacted me again on WhatsApp. Around 1.30am on July 28, he picked me up from my place. I thought he would take me for dinner at a restaurant. But he took me instead to his flat in Al Warsan where I found he had made dinner."
She told the investigator that he had consumed alcohol. The woman kept resisting his sexual moves until 6am and could not leave as he would not let her. She claimed that he raped her after repeatedly slapping her on the face and beating her up. She broke down later.
He dropped her at her workplace in the afternoon after trying to calm her down. The woman complained against him after returning home.
According to the forensic report, the complainant's body bore bruises and her examination indicated she had been subjected to a recent sexual assault.
During the prosecution investigation, the defendant admitted he had sex with the complainant.
He can appeal the ruling within 15 days from Wednesday.
