Dubai - The protection of society against the hazards of drugs and its illegal trade is one of the main roles Dubai Customs played.

Around 120 capsules of cocaine weighing 10.10kg were recovered from a passenger and 6.758kg of cocaine concealed in a suitcase and jacket of a woman coming from an African country seized in two major hauls this year till now, the Dubai Customs announced while marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
In another big seizure, 5.6kg of marijuana was recovered from a passenger coming from an Asian country, it added.
Director-General of Dubai Customs Ahmed Mahboob Musabih said: "The Jebel Ali Port Inspection Centre also seized 53,760 Lyrica narcotic pills hidden in cartons as part of a shipment."
Musabih said that the protection of society against the hazards of drugs and its illegal trade is one of the main roles Dubai Customs played. "All customs centres are equipped with the most advanced inspection technologies." These include the container smart inspection system at Jebel Ali Port and the smart suitcase inspection system at Dubai Airports, he pointed out.
"The internally developed Dubai Customs' Smart Risk Engine is one of the leading systems used in detecting suspected shipments."
Kudos to K9
Ibrahim Kamali, director of passenger operations department at Dubai Customs, said that they keep honing staff inspectors' skills and expertise through numerous workshops and training programmes.
"The advanced inspection technologies, including the anti-narcotics Mobile Lab, are in place as well as Al Kashif Vehicle and K9 Unit."
Shuaib Al Suwaidi, director of customs intelligence department, said the K9 drug sniffing dogs unit at Dubai Customs has helped thwart many smuggling attempts. "The K9 Unit has seen a quantum leap in the number of drug detections since it was formed in 2007."
