Dubai expat blackmails ex-fiancee with private photos

Dubai - The man confessed that he threatened to defame her in front of her husband and expose her past.

An expat is standing trial at the Dubai Court of First Instance on charges of invasion of privacy and posting private photos of his ex-fiancee and her sister on social media and threatening them.
According to public prosecution records, the 31-year-old Asian man posted photos of the two sisters, of his nationality, on Instagram and Facebook.
He also blackmailed his ex-fiancee stating that he would disgrace her by disclosing information about her past. He was pushing her into repaying him the gold and money he had allegedly spent on her during their engagement period.
He is also accused of verbally abusing the woman on WhatsApp.
The case dates back to January 28 and was registered at Al Barsha police station.
In his deposition during the public prosecution investigation, the defendant claimed that one of the women duped him of more than Dh 1 million, including Dh 90,000 worth of gold, and a car worth Dh 60,000, after they had been engaged for seven years.
He recounted how he was shocked at a certain point to learn about her marriage to another man. "I went mad after learning that she got pregnant. I then realised she had just been using me to make me splurge on her. I found out that she just cared about the money and that she did not love me."
He then went back to his home country. "I set up a fake Facebook and Instagram pages where I posted private photos of our engagement and of her family. I verbally abused her when she reached out to me again on Instagram and threatened her to return the jewellery and all that I had spent on her."
The man also confessed he threatened to defame her in front of her husband and expose her past. He said he was shattered and frustrated because of how she had treated him.
The defendant's ex-fiancee said that she had broken up with him after he kept postponing their marriage date. "Every time the date of our marriage drew near, he would get evasive and ask me for more money. It was like that until I cancelled our engagement. He then began to blackmail me and threatened to dishonour me. He set up fake pages where he posted my private photos."
She added that the defendant circulated her mobile number. "I received many phone calls from unknown men who took me for a prostitute because of what he had posted about me online."
The police seized his laptops and smart phones and found more than 5,000 photos of the complainant and several conversations that could be useful to the case.
The accused will be sentenced on July 21.
