The Dubai Police on Wednesday denied reports of a Dubai-based gang which purportedly kidnapped and raped children, and sold their internal organs.
The report was circulated on BlackBerry phones and social media networks.
Terming these reports “baseless”, Major-General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant Commander In Chief for Criminal Investigations, said Dubai is safe and secure.
Al Mansouri said the Dubai Police is currently tracing the source of these “rumours”. “People who publish such rumours will face strict penalty,” he warned.
These rumours, Al Mansouri said, started a week ago, when warning messages began doing the rounds asking people to take care of their children. The messages went on to say that three UAE nationals were killed by the gang when they tried to help the kidnapped children.
He praised the cooperation of the public, who called the police to report these rumours. “We call upon people to not circulate such kind of rumours as they will be held legally responsible for promoting it even if it was done without intention,” he warned.
The people responsible for initiating these rumours should be “penalised”, he said, as they are committing a crime against the society by instilling fear in them.
