A Dubai student on a holiday trip to his home town in the South Indian state of Kerala was among the three children killed in a road accident on Saturday evening.
Mohammed Sajjad, 15, a ninth grader at The Millennium School in Dubai, died on the spot when his scooter collided with a car. His seven-year-old cousin Afraq and the latter’s neighbour Mubaris, 10, who were riding pillion, died on the way to a local hospital, family friends told Khaleej Times.
Sajjad, son of Mohammed Sabir, a director of the AMT Group in Dubai and the oldest of four siblings, had gone to Kasaragod, a municipality in Kerala, to enjoy the Eid holidays with his relatives and friends there.
“I don’t know whose scooter it was and how the kids were allowed to ride it,” said a family friend in Dubai. “The accident took place when the kids rode on the scooter to buy snacks for Iftar.”
Another family friend said Sajjad’s head was crushed in the accident. “It is a big tragedy for us and for all in the town. Hundreds of people attended their burial yesterday.”
Sabir, who had accompanied his family to Kerala, had come back to Dubai a few days ago. Some of his relatives, partners and colleagues at the company flew with him to his home town Nellikkunnu in Kasaragod after the tragic news reached here on Saturday.
Family friends remembered Sajjad as a smart boy who did well in his studies and extra-curricular activities. “The families are shattered…Their children who were eager to celebrate Eid will no longer be there. It will take time to come to terms with the great loss,” one of them said.
No comment was available from the school.
