Two men on visit visa have been sentenced to two years in prison each for breaking into a flat and robbing jewellery worth more than Dh76,000.
The two Georgian nationals, aged 23 and 25, have been convicted by the Court of First Instance of charges of trespass, forced robbery and damage of others' property. They will be deported after completing their jail terms as per the court order.
The case dates back to last December 18.
The two men, currently in detention, are also accused in another case of resisting four on-duty police officers and attempting suicide by cutting their veins. The complainant, a 41-year-old Indian PRO, said that he left his flat around 4pm and came back three hours later.
"I knew there was a burglary when I found the door's lock broken. My jewellery, worth more than Dh76,000, was gone." He added that the thieves also took Dh6,000 in cash and two digital cameras.
A police corporal said that they arrested the two accused in Naif, few days after the burglary was reported in a flat in Al Hamriyah.
"They put up stiff resistance. We searched them and found the jewellery." A police sergeant said that the two men admitted to having broken into the complainant's flat. They shared his jewellery later.
The verdict has been appealed.
