The Abu Dhabi Police arrested two Africans who robbed people of their wallets after spitting on them to distract the victims.
Colonel Ahmed Saif bin Zeitoun Al Muhairi, director of the Capital Police Directorate, said that the police swung into action after receiving a number of reports in which people were robbed in a similar fashion.
Explaining the modus operandi of the duo, he said one of the men would first spit on the victim and then apologize to distract the person's attention. The other man would rob the wallet dexterously, he pointed out.
Al Muhairi said that most of these incidents took place in crowded areas such as markets and malls. He added that the police have intensified efforts to check these crimes in such places.
Al Muhairi cautioned residents not to carry huge amounts of money while moving out of banks or money exchange offices as it could be risky. Anyone who encounters such an incident should immediately report it to the police, he noted.
