An Emirati man who used his brother's passport to travel because he was wanted by authorities, has been sentenced to three years in jail by the Dubai Court of First Instance.
According to public prosecution records, the 37-year-old man's passport was seized at the Dubai Courts. In 2007, he travelled to Thailand and managed to exit the Dubai International Airport, using his brother's passport.
The unemployed man has been found guilty of two charges of illegally using another person's passport and exiting the country illegally.
The complainant, a 41-year-old Emirati employee, said that on the evening of May 24, 2007, he tried in vain to look for his passport where he had left it in his car outside his place. "The next day, I found out that it was my brother who stole it and used it to travel to Thailand. He was wanted by more than one party and his passport was seized at the courts," he said.
The accused admitted during the prosecution investigation that he decided to leave the country but since his passport was seized, he decided to steal his brother's passport. He bought an air ticket in the latter's name at the airport.
He left through Dubai airport for Thailand, where he stayed for three years. Decided to return after this period, he turned himself in at the UAE embassy in Thailand.
However, it was not clear from the records why the case took that long to reach the court.
The accused, who has been placed in provisional detention, may appeal the verdict.
