The Sharjah Municipality has busted several illegal markets, where mobile vendors were selling duplicate products and expired food. The products, which were being offered at low prices to attract customers, were seized and donated to charities. Some products had to be destroyed as they were deemed harmful to public health, officials said on Sunday.
Khalid bin Falah Al Suwaidi, assistant director of customer service, Sharjah Municipality, said the civic body has readied 40 teams as part of a campaign targeting illegal markets in different parts of the emirate, "especially around labour accommodations and industrial areas".
"Vendors take advantage of the summer vacation to display their goods at cheap prices to attract customers. They are selling goods of unknown source, and food items that were found to be unfit for consumption. Most of those who were caught during the inspections were found to be staying in the country illegally, while some were even wanted by the police," Al Suwaidi said.
The official urged residents to report such illegal activities on 993.
