A man denied in the Court of First Instance of having threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend unless she continued to do business with him.
The 23-year-old Indian man, on a visit visa, is accused of making criminal threats against the Italian woman with whom he used to have a relationship and business deals.
The threats were made between February and April.
The complainant, a tourist, aged 27, said the accused made the threats verbally and through WhatsApp. "He threatened to kill me and my parents unless everything returned to normal between us," she told the prosecutor.
The police summoned the accused to the Jebel Ali Police Station for questioning. "He denied the woman's accusations and claimed that he and the woman had been living together and that she took his mobile phone while he slept and sent the threatening messages by herself after they had a fight. He said he had deleted the messages," a police sergeant said.
The complainant's Ethiopian friend, a 34-year-old sales executive, said she visited the victim at her place in Tecom. "The defendant was then in the living room. She told me they had a fight and showed me the WhatsApp messages sent by the accused. He threatened to make her parents disappear. I felt scared and told her to report him to the police," her friend said.
The witness added that the complainant would not inform the police because the accused had told her he had solid police contacts.
However, another friend of the complainant informed the police, and the cops came to her flat, and while they were there she took her belongings.
"About two weeks later, I spotted him smiling and watching us while we were in the car park of a hotel. He was also watching us when we were eating at a restaurant. He was always smiling and did not order anything," the complainant's friend said during the investigation.
A verdict is expected on November 16.
