A 31-year-old Pakistani man allegedly slit the throat of a compatriot with a broken glass during a fight involving several others, a court heard on Tuesday.
The unemployed, S.H., has denied a premeditated murder in the Court of First Instance. He claimed he was drunk and could not remember what happened when he got involved in a fight that night.
He reportedly admitted during the investigation to having stabbed the victim, claiming he was mad over an old dispute and could not stop himself.
The incident, which took place in Al Rafaa on March 25, last year, was reported by an Egyptian man who happened to be at a nearby petrol station.
"I saw two groups of men engaging in a fight behind a hotel. I saw a man (S.H.) entering the shop and walking out with two bottles. He went to re-join the others."
The witness realised that something bad was going to happen and called the police. "I then saw S.H. leaving in a cab. I went behind the hotel and saw a man lying down with a slit throat".
A police lieutenant quoted S.H. as admitting to have been involved in a fight.
"I stood by my friend when I saw him being beaten up by a group of men. I could then escape and bought two bottles and gave one to my friend".
S.H. reportedly admitted to the officer that he broke the bottle and chased the victim, who was running but lagging behind his friends. "S.H. admitted that he stabbed the victim with the broken glass," the lieutenant said.
Surveillance cameras installed at nearby buildings showed the accused walking out of a night club around 2.45am. The victim was also spotted entering the club. S.H. was then seen entering a shop in a petrol station and taking two bottles out of a fridge.
Shortly later, S.H. was seen hitting the victim with what could be the bottle he had just purchased. The cause of the victim's death was the deep stab wound in the neck causing severe bleeding.
The hearing has been adjourned to May 3.
