The owner of a contracting firm and its supervisor have been jailed for three months each and ordered to jointly pay Dh200,000 in bloody money to the family of the worker who died of electrocution while on duty. They were also fined Dh2,000 each.
The Federal Supreme Court in Abu Dhabi upheld earlier rulings by lower courts that handed down the sentences to the pair after they were found guilty of causing death of the Asian man due to negligence as there were no safety measures at the site.
Official court documents stated that the Asian man was fixing electric cables at a newly constructed building in one of the northern emirates when the incident occurred.
Police said the worker was electrocuted while carrying out wiring work at the site. Police investigations revealed that the victim was not wearing safety gear when the incident occurred and his company too had not followed safety procedures. The report also said there was faulty wiring due to improper installation of electrical cables, which caused the victim's electrocution.
Prosecutors charged the company owner and the supervisor with causing death of the worker due to negligence and failure to comply with safety regulations.
Both Criminal Court of First Instance and the Appellant Court had earlier sentenced the pair to three months in jail and ordered them to jointly pay blood money to the victim's family.
The men challenged the ruling to UAE's top court, which has rejected their appeal and maintained earlier rulings.
