Man goes on trial for assaulting policemen in UAE

Sharjah - He was nabbed for allegedly possessing drugs

An Arab - accused of assaulting policemen - went on trial at the Sharjah Criminal Court. The man pleaded not guilty and refuted the allegations.
He said that he was beaten up by the cops.
The man was accused of assaulting the two policemen when they tried to arrest him for allegedly possessing drugs in his car.
The case dates back to February 2016.
The police got legal permission from the public prosecution to search the accused and found drugs in his possession. According to the police, the accused resisted arrest and kicked the cops.
The accused told the court that he was coming from the dawn prayers when the police stopped him. He said that the policemen attacked him and injured his eye. He asked them to take him to a medical centre, but they did not do so.The accused told the court that his eyes have been damaged.
He pointed out that the drugs were prescribed to him by a doctor in Abu Dhabi as he was sick. He also submitted a medical certificate to the court to prove his claim.
The father of the accused - who attended the court hearing - asked the judge to release his son on bail.
The judge adjourned the case and will hear the witnesses on September 17.
