The Sharjah Criminal Court has sentenced a young Asian man to six months in jail to be followed by deportation for allegedly stealing a bird and selling it in the market for Dh1,000. A fine of Dh1,000 has also been imposed on him.
The incident took place last July at Umm Al Kuzma area in Sharjah. The accused, in his early 20s, denied the accusation when he was questioned by the judiciary.
The accused told the presiding judge, Hussain Al Ousovi, that on the given day at around 7am, while working in his sponsor's house, he heard a sound behind a window.
When he got closer, the man was surprised to see a bird there. The bird was unable to fly. Thinking it did not belong to anyone, he caught it and sold it off in the market for Dh1,000.
However, the complainant lodged a case at the police station, saying that the accused entered his house without permission and stole the bird.
On being confronted by the judge, the accused admitted having sold the bird in the market, but denied the theft charge.
