Residents here need no longer worry about a masked robber whose CCTV-recorded robbery video went viral on Instagram; he is now in police custody.
The Umm Al Quwain police, alerted of the suspect, initiated intensive investigation and formed search teams across the emirate armed with the latest surveillance systems.
"The suspect proved to be a 20-year-old Arab resident," said Colonel Humaid Mattar bin Ageel, manager of the Criminal Investigations Department of Umm Al Quwain police.
In a short video, widely shared on Instagram in December, the young suspect attempted to rob a bakery cashier at knife point while wearing a weird mask, he added.
"An Asian staff there bravely confronted the robber and pushed him out of the outlet located at Salma area after the latter attacked him with a sharp knife and injured one of his hands," Col Ageel added.
Col Ageel pointed out that the suspect, facing charges of armed robbery and assault, was involved in another robbery.
"Investigations showed that the suspect walked into the bakery wearing a full face mask, pointed a knife at the cashier, and demanded money, threatening to stab him."
The robber after losing the battle with the brave bakery staff managed to escape. "He sneaked into another shop, robbed a charity box and fled the scene."
Though masked, the UAQ police managed to identify the robber and arrest him. The mask and knife that appeared to match the ones used in the robbery were found, and the robber has been referred to the public prosecution.
Col Ageel noted that the UAQ police are equipped with the latest and most sophisticated surveillance devices.
"Our staffers are highly qualified and go through intensive training on a regular basis to curb all crimes, and ensure safety and security in the emirate."
