A nurse has been cleared of the charge of stealing valuables from her elderly sponsor's home including an expensive watch.
The 26-year-old Sudanese nurse was accused of stealing the watch and a laptop while her 81-year-old Emirati sponsor was out of the UAE on a trip for treatment.
The Court of First Instance found her not guilty of the charge after her sponsor gave a testimony in court in her favour. The employer, who showed up in court in a wheelchair, told the judge bench that he trusted her. "No matter what happened I don't want it to end like that. I trust she did not steal anything."
The sponsor's son, a 33-year-old soldier, told the prosecutor they hired the nurse to take care of his ailing father in June 2016.
"When my father left the country for treatment, we wanted to take her temporarily to stay at my brother's house until my dad's return.
"She refused at first but as we insisted, she said she would leave her bags in our house and someone would come back later to take them.
"But she decided suddenly she wanted to travel back to her country," he told the prosecutor.
"When my sister and sister-in-law searched her bags, they found a watch, and a laptop that belonged to my father in addition to Dh6,000. We complained against her".
The complaint was registered on October 10, last year, at Bur Dubai police station. The nurse denied having stolen anything and claimed they were gifts.
The sponsor said during investigation he did not gift the nurse the laptop but gave it to her to use while working for him. "I don't recall gifting her a watch. I asked my divorcee to give her a bank card for fuel purchases."
The nurse was then detained.
