An Asian prisoner was allegedly sexually assaulted by two prisoners, according to a complaint received by the Emirates Human Rights Association (EHRA). Following the complaint, the EHRA, in cooperation with Al Rashidiya police station and the Human Rights Department of the Dubai Police, separated the victim and his alleged assailants, and sent the former to a psychiatrist.
Ali Al Qeshi, member of the board of directors of the EHRA, said the association will take the requisite measures to separate new inmates and those already serving jail terms to avert any potential conflicts.
The alleged victim, R.M., 29, had arrived in the country early in July in search of a job. He was detained by the Dubai Police in Al Rashidiya police station prison cell for allegedly committing adultery. According to the complaint filed by R.M.’s sister, he was sexually assaulted by two other prison inmates — both GCC nationals — who had been with him in the same cell around 3.30am on August 23.
The alleged victim did not cry for help “out of fear”, Al Qeshi said, adding that his assailants reportedly threatened to kill him if he reported the crime to anybody.
Lieutenant Abdul Rahman Al Hasheimi, duty officer at Al Rashidiya police station, instructed that the victim be moved from the prison cell to the detention room. He said the victim underwent a medical examination, following which a police probe was initiated.
Abdul Rahman Ghanim, head of the Child Committee at the EHRA, said the victim’s sister was initially hesitant to follow up on her brother’s case. “Yet, she felt secure and safe here. We assured her that the UAE takes care of each individual living here regardless of his/her nationality or religion,” he said.
