Residents shocked over Global Village accident

In light of the tragedy, Global Village authorities have suspended all funfair rides owned and operated by Freij Entertainment — the owners of the Ferris wheel that caused the accident, until further notice.

One resident, Fatima Suhail, expressed her sadness: “This is extremely shocking and tragic news.”

The victim, 37-year-old A.R.Q.A.H., who was spending Thursday evening with his loved ones at Global Village was fatally struck by an iron rod which fell from the Ferris wheel, killing him on the spot.

Suhail said authorities need to take action following the incident: “The government of Dubai, in addition to DSF organisers and Freij, should investigate the matter and take the necessary measures to avoid such fatal incidences in the near future. My deepest condolences to the families of the victim.”

Another resident, Shahram Ghaem Maralani, calling for tighter legislation said: “Stricter safety and maintenance standards must be built for amusement parks.”

In a statement provided to the media, CEO of Global Village Saeed Ali bin Redha said: “On behalf of Global Village I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the family of the man who tragically passed away following the accident late on Thursday evening.

The investigation is going on and Global Village management is working closely with the concerned authorities, providing full support, following the tragedy.

In the meantime, the rest of Global Village will continue operations every day, as usual, offering our visitors a wide range of shopping and cultural attractions.”

Officials at Freij Entertainment have declined to comment on the issue for the time being, but a source from the company said that investigations are under way and the company will issue a detailed statement soon.

Salman Redha, Director, Public Health and Safety Department of Dubai Municipality, said: “We are working closely with all officials involved and investigations into the matter are going on.”
