A police official told Khaleej Times that it has been found that scammers are creating fake accounts in the name of high profile personalities and sending messages to victims asking for help.
According to the police, the scammers send messages to victims that they are out of the country and have run out of cash and are unable to access their bank accounts. They then ask the victims for money, promising to pay back when they return.
The police urged the public not to add strangers from foreign countries on their social media accounts, and also not to send money to unknown people asking for help due to their miserable condition. People have also been asked not to share their bank account numbers with strangers.
Police have received several complaints from victims and called on the public to be cautious while dealing with people on social media.
Many scammers try to convince their victims that they are in a desperate situation and need cash to treat a family member suffering from cancer. Some of them ask for sending them Zakat and charity to distribute it to people in need.
Sharjah Police has urged the public to call at 800151 or 7999 to report any kinds of scams.
