Special Dubai Police team helps reduce youth crime

Dubai — Al Qusais police station has formed a group called the ‘typhoon band’ to combat crimes involving guns, knives and swords. The team has imposed a ‘curfew’ after 12am, during which gatherings of young men are dispersed. This, according to a top police official, has reduced the instances of crime committed by the youth.

This was announced by Major-General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Criminal Investigation.

Al Qusais police station, he said, managed to reduce serious crimes in its jurisdiction from 22.8 per cent to 18.1 per cent in the first half of this year as compared to the same period last year.

A new illegal practice has, however, emerged in the area, he said. Some people were found selling vegetables and clothes in Muhaisna labour accommodation. In cooperation with the Dubai Municipality, police raids resulted in the seizure of a number of such illegal goods. Police also arrested 31 residency law violators in the raids.

Al Qusais police station recorded 3,773 cases of dud checks during the first six months of this year; 206 cases of using and selling alcoholic beverages; 217 cases of people who refused to pay fares; and 256 assault cases. The police also arrested 124 illegals.
