Dubai Municipality has fined seven tobacco shops for illegally selling e-cigarettes and vapes, a senior official said.
Redha Salman, director of the public health and safety department at Dubai Municipality, confiscated 30 e-cigarettes and vapes during an inspection campaign that covered 11 outlets in Bur Dubai, Al Hudaiba and Al Murar.
He added that inspectors seized about 100kg of tobacco during the raid, stating that the quantity was packed in bags and not in packages according to specifications. "This means it didn't come with a label that stated instructions for use, content and warnings," said Salman.
He added that nearly 200 packets of artificially-flavored tobacco were withdrawn from the market as it came without description or source, making it unclear as to the extent of its toxicity or harm to the health.
The number of non-compliant tobacco packages, which were confiscated during the campaign, was about 150.
Salman stressed that the sale of e-cigarettes and vapes is prohibited under Federal Law No. 15 of 2009, and by a decision of the General Secretariat of Municipalities since 2009, because of the danger it poses to people's health.
He said the municipality regularly monitors shops and outlets selling tobacco to detect any violations. If these cigarettes are seized, they are confiscated immediately and legal action is taken against violators.
