A site supervisor has been charged in the Court of First Instance with stealing a watch worth Dh963,000.
The 40-year-old Syrian allegedly committed the theft in June last year. The complainant, a 40-year-old Canadian company manager of Arab origin, said that on June 27, 2015, the accused was with other workers from a maintenance company at his place.
"They came to fix the air conditioner. At that moment, I checked my watch that I had left on a shelf and could not find it."
As he asked his wife and the workers about it, he noticed that the accused left his apartment.
"The theft was reported to Al Barsha police," a police corporal said.
"When we questioned the accused, he admitted he stole it and hid it in a false ceiling inside a washroom."
A police lieutenant quoted the accused as saying that on his way back to the complainant's apartment after receiving a phone call from the latter, he saw the police officers in the building. "He felt scared, he claimed. So he entered a washroom and hid the watch in a false ceiling".
