Some of the defendants were seen nervous and tense. They addressed the media persons and held aloft placards which read ‘Shias of Bahrain are innocent in 2012’, ‘Egypt’s communists were innocent in 1988’, and ‘Islaha Dawa defendants are also innocent in 2013’, in a reference to similar cases in the Arab world in which the defendants were acquitted.
The defendants, however, confirmed the integrity of the UAE judiciary and said they were loyal to the Rulers of the emirates.
One of the defendants, Hassan Al Hammadi thanked the media for the “credible” coverage of the trial, but he criticised it for not taking the views of their families who had much to say. Addressing the lawyers, Khalifa Al Nuaimi said 71 defendants had lodged complaints of being tortured, and he wanted to find out what had happened to the complaint.
Sultan bin Kayid Al Qasimi said: “Even if the innocence is lost on earth, it will not be lost in heaven.”
Silence prevailed when Presiding Judge Falah Al Hajiri stepped in to the courtroom at 10.30am, accompanied by brother judges of the bench.
He read out a speech in which he said the laws in the UAE were based on the Islamic Shariah, the revelation by the Almighty Allah in the Holy Quran and the sayings that quoted Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) .
When he read out the 10-year jail sentences of 56 defendants, voices of prayers rose, rejecting the verdict as some defendants and their family members stood on the chairs in protest. Despite the commotion, the judge completed reading out the verdicts.
In all, 56 accused were sentenced to ten years in jail while eight others, who were tried in absentia, received 15 years each. The court sentenced five defendants to seven years in jail and acquitted 25 others, including 13 women.
After he left the courtroom, all defendants started chanting “Oh! Self be patient and don’t shake”.
Security personnel sent out the media persons and correspondents through different gates to prevent them from mingling with the families of the defendants, and the situation returned to normal soon.
