The Dubai Police's anti-narcotics department arrested three Asians for smuggling and possession of large quantities of drugs.
Major-General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police, praised the undercover operation carried out by the anti-narcotics team that succeeded in thwarting the Asians' attempts to smuggle over 25kg cannabis and 1,500 grammes of crystal methamphetamine or "shabu". The official revealed long hours were spent by the team in chasing the perpetrators, before apprehending them in an ambush.
Major-General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, assistant commander-in-chief for criminal investigation department at the Dubai Police, said that the anti-narcotics team foiled the men's attempts by carrying out two ambushes, one organised in one of the commercial marketplaces in Dubai and the other near the Dubai Marina.
This led to the arrest of the three defendants, a 50-year-old boat captain identified as R.R.G., a 32-year-old sailor A.F.B., and another sailor, 39-year-old A.M.
A secret police informer posed as a buyer of drugs, and after he completed negotiations over a "deal", the drugs were brought in to be handed over to him. The anti-narcotics team then rushed in and arrested the accused, who were caught red-handed with a plastic bag of drugs brought from one of the boats they worked on. The suspects then handed over all the drugs in their possession to the police. Major-General Al Mansouri added that the smugglers were very cautious in their dealings. They were negotiating in a tough manner with the fictitious buyer planted by the police and not ready to agree on a deal, but the police team eventually made the breakthrough that resulted in the arrest.
Brigadier-General Eid Mohammed Thani Harib, director of the General Depatment of Anti-Narcotic at the Dubai Police, attributed the operation's success to the teams' professionalism and surveillance operations on the accused, that gave them accurate information. He called upon members of the community, citizens and residents to cooperate with the Dubai Police if they had any drugs-related information.
