The court pronounced the verdicts on Sunday.

The court ordered the two women, who are married but not living with their husbands in the UAE, to be stoned to death, while the man who had a sexual relationship with the first woman was single and was handed down 80 lashes. The other man who had sex with the second woman has not been identified.

As per the Islamic Shariah, adultery can be substantiated through confession or if four people witnessed the offence and testified before the court.

Earlier in a similar case, the Court of Cassation had ruled that getting pregnant when the husband is not around itself is a sufficient proof to prove adultery.

It is worth noting that the Abu Dhabi Criminal Court had previously sentenced convicts in similar cases to stoning to death but it had not been enforced. It is known that the UAE laws, which base its provisions on the Islamic Shariah, exercise leniency as much as possible on people charged with such offences.
