Residents in UAE have been flooded with fake cash prize messages and job scams online and over the phone. Abu Dhabi Police took to social media on Monday to warn against another scam.
In a video posted on Instagram, an unidentified Egyptian woman recounts her story to Abu Dhabi Police on how she was a victim of a cash prize scam.
"I was a victim of a phone scam. I received a call from a person, claiming to be a local telecommunications company employee, about a prize announced by the government."
Talking about his modus operandi, she said: "He asked me to check the serial number on the back of my SIM card - I believed their claims."
"He first asked for some money as insurance from my credit card. Second, I was asked to recharge some SIM cards and then I gave him my serial number."
"Third," she added, "I was given the name to whom I need to transfer money through a money exchange company [in order to claim my prize money].
"I was told not to disconnect the phone call, not to discuss this call with anyone else, or to inform anyone of the prize as it is 'confidential'."
The lady thanked Abu Dhabi Police for their quick response after she informed them of the call. "I know the police will arrest such scammers very soon."
It is noteworthy that although she doesn't disclose whether any financial transactions took place, but she confesses to being a victim.
At the end of the video, the police requested all citizens report such phone calls to Aman service on 8002626.
