A 32-year-old Afghan woman and her seven-year-old daughter are fighting for their lives after they were assaulted, allegedly by a robber, in their house in Al Derari in Sharjah early Sunday morning. The woman’s husband had gone for late night prayers when the alleged incident took place.

The robber reportedly used a thick stick and beat up the girl and her mother — who was breast-feeding her six-month-old infant — causing them severe injuries. The motive for the assault, according to the police, was robbery.

The suspect managed to flee with all the jewellery and cash in the house.

The police said they were notified about the incident at 1.30am by the woman’s husband, who found her and their daughter lying in a pool of blood at their house. The police dispatched paramedics and police patrols to the site, who rushed the victims to Al Qassimi Hospital. The victims are currently in a critical state in the hospital’s ICU.

Prima facie investigations have revealed that the robber struck at a time he knew the man of the house wouldn’t be home.

“The robber broke into the house armed with the stick, and demanded that the woman hand over all her belongings, to which she agreed. He assaulted them after the child tried to run out of the room to seek help. The intruder hit the woman in several places, including her head, which has caused damage to her skull,” a senior police official said.

When the man started hitting the child, her mother tried to protect her. “This resulted in the fracture to her skull.” The police have launched a manhunt to nab the robber.
