The Abu Dhabi criminal court on Tuesday sentenced a woman to three years in jail on charges of attempted murder of her one-day old baby. She and her lover had dumped their child born out of wedlock in a garbage can in a residential area in the Capital.
The court also sentenced her to an additional six months in jail for committing adultery. Her lover also has been handed down the same two rulings.
According to court records, the public prosecution referred the pair to court after receiving a report from the Abu Dhabi Municipality that a newborn baby was found dumped in a garbage bag.
The criminal investigation team rushed to the scene and examined the baby, who was found alive.
The baby was then taken to a city hospital to get screened and undergo medical tests, and a police team started investigating the case.
The fingerprints found on the garbage bag matched those of the woman's lover, who confessed upon interrogation that the baby's mother asked him to dump the baby in the garbage bin after delivery.
