A worker who was convicted of carrying out burglaries will have his case heard again by the appeal court in Abu Dhabi.
The Federal Supreme Court in Abu Dhabi has ordered for the retrial of the Asian man because the lower court only fined him Dh3,000.
Court documents stated that the man carried out two robberies and burgled the villa of a family in a northern emirate while owners were away. Prosecutors charged the man with theft and robbery and requested for a harsh punishment.
The man however, denied the charges, stressing that he wasn't involved in any of the crimes.
The Court of First Instance had acquitted the Asian but the prosecution challenged the verdict at the Appeal Court, which cancelled the earlier verdict and convicted the man.
The court also ordered him to pay Dh3,000 fine. Prosecutors challenged the sentence at the top court, stressing that the punishment was too light as the UAE Penal Code stipulates jail term for a period of not less than a year for a person convicted of theft or robbery.
