A young driver has gone on trial for driving under the influence of drugs and assaulting a policeman after he was stopped for illegally changing the colour of his vehicle.
The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance heard that the Emirati man in his early 20s was stopped by traffic police officers after they noticed that his car paint had been changed to a different colour without permission from authorities.
When a traffic police officer asked the driver if he had changed the paint, he reportedly denied it. The police then asked him to follow them to a police station to verify his statement. But the man resisted and assaulted the policemen as he tried to flee. The police, however, chased and detained him.
After he reached the police station, the police found that the man was driving under the influence of narcotics. His urine sample tested positive for drugs. The authorities also inspected the car and found out that its colour had been changed without permission.
Prosecutors charged the Emirati with driving under the influence of drugs, assaulting a police officer and illegally changing the colour of his car.
The Emirati denied all the charges when he appeared in court. He told the judge that the car belonged to his mother.
