On Sunday, Abu Dhabi received its first spell of rain of the year. Some students missed or escaped the spell of showers as schools commenced mandatory remote learning for the first two weeks of the second academic term.

The light to moderate morning rain did set the mood for many pupils to go back to their classes after the winter break.

Ryan Faraz Sameer, a Grade 2 student of Abu Dhabi Indian School, warmed himself up for his class by enjoying the drizzle from his flat.

“I love to get drenched when it rains. Rain makes me happy. I found that all my friends in class were all smiles. If it were a normal school day, I would have jumped on puddles.”

Farheen Fathima, a Grade 5 student, remarked: “It was an amazing sight. It rained on the first day of school. It’s like the beginning of good things. It’s a good sign.”

Omar Mohamed Elsayed, a Grade 4 student of Creative British School, hoped that face-to-face classes would resume soon.

“I am glad to start the new term. I was eager to meet my friends, though online, I enjoyed my first day. Teachers were very welcoming. I hope that in two weeks, the physical classes start.”

Unlike other institutes, it was the start of a new academic year at Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Bangladesh Islamia School. Principal Mir Anisul Hasan noted the school follows a January to December cycle.

“We are all happy. We had a good beginning. Today, we kept it as an orientation day for children. Parents were also briefed,” Hasan added.

According to the local authorities, classes will be held online till January 16 to protect the health and safety of students, teachers and school staff.
