The Abu Dhabi Educational Council (Adec) has asked private schools to monitor and evaluate the quality of education and care they provide.

Training in this regard was carried out this month for schools in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region, and in a recent statement Adec said: “Self-evaluation helps school leaders understand their schools, identify next steps in a particular area, and give a number of possible targets for the school development plan.”
Schools are being asked to assess their teaching quality against the eight performance standards of the Irtiqa’a (aspiration) inspection framework. These include students’ achievement and progress; personal development of students; teaching quality; meeting students’ needs through curriculum; protection, care, guidance and support of students; quality of accommodation and facilities; resources that help a school achieve its objectives; and competence of leadership and management of the school.
“The eight standards help inspectors and school leaders assess the quality of education against similar schools locally and against international best practices,” Adec pointed out. The purpose of the training was to align the self-evaluation outcome with the school’s development plan. During the workshop, case studies were presented from three private schools that made significant improvements in their inspection grades, and their experience improving the quality of teaching and learning in leadership and management.
“Adec’s expectations for schools are that they be responsible for monitoring the quality of education they provide and to explore ways of doing better through continuing school improvement. As part of the school development process, the school’s leadership team should undertake and maintain a process of self-evaluation that is current, recorded and kept up-to-date,” Adec said.
