Abu Dhabi - Young scientists will get their skills tested in a competition a at encouraging them to enhance their capability in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem).

The competition will be held in partnership with the organisers of the ‘Young Scientist’ competition in Ireland.
“Abu Dhabi is the first Arab state to partner with Ireland (on this) … they will teach students to think out of the box and get their inventions showcased across the world,” said Dr Amal Al Qubaisi, director-general of Adec. She noted that participation can be done individually or in teams, regardless of age.
For the first year, the competition will be held emirate-wide, elevated to national level during the second year and international level the third year. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Dr Al Qubaisi said eight initiatives that will enhance innovation will be rolled out starting the next academic year across the emirate, from kindergarten to Grade 12.
These initiatives will see the creation of three innovation hubs that include specialised laboratories in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region. Innovation will be incorporated in the school curriculum and will be integrated with all subjects through the use of computer.
Innovation clubs will be activated in all Abu Dhabi schools. The clubs will provide students the opportunity to take part in science projects, experiments and research activities, as well as, the chance to use their critical-thinking and problem-solving techniques through extra-curricular programmes.
In an endeavour to foster innovation at both the public and private schools, Adec is currently developing an “innovation barometer”, which will form part of the inspection programme (Irtiqaa) routinely being carried out at schools. The barometer will measure the level of adoption of innovation at schools and will assess the quality of student participation.
“(This) will help create a competitive youth according to the 2030 vision who can compete globally,” Dr Al Qubaisi said. -olivia@khaleejtimes.com
