Abu Dhabi — Over 1,900 students displaced by the closure of Al Worood Academy Private School this August will be offered alternative places at other schools in the Capital.

The Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec) said on Thursday that parents will be informed by a text message when to collect their re-allocation letters from Al Worood. The letter will inform them which school has been allocated for their children. Adec said the schools were selected based on proximity to the students’ residence. Siblings are given seats in the same school.

According to Adec, parents have one week to register their child upon receiving the letter, after which, “Adec shall bear no responsibility for not approaching the assigned school within the defined time mentioned in the letter.” It added that if parents wish to opt for another school, “it is the parent’s responsibility to do so at their own expense.”

Al Worood Academy was ordered shut by the end of this academic year by Adec following the death of Nizha Aalaa in October 7 last year. Nizha, who was three and eight months old at that time was ‘forgotten’ and left locked inside the school bus for hours after falling asleep on the way to school. She died of heat exhaustion and suffocation. She was just in her second month at kindergarten.

Adec has revoked Al Worood’s operating licence for its “gross negligence in implementing student safety and security measure, particularly with regard to school transportation.”
