Dubai — Students from 12 schools across Dubai took part in the first Cultural Ambassadors’ Writing Workshop at the Dubai International Writers’ Centre (DIWC) on Thursday.

The workshop was hosted by online educational platform LendMeYourLiteracy which publishes and celebrates children’s writing with a global audience. Students from Grade 4 and 5 learned about the culture and heritage of Dubai by listening to Fatma Al Marri of Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) who told stories of her childhood in the Shindagha area of the city.

In the setting of the Dubai International Writers’ Centre courtyard, students worked with Jenny Murray of LendMeYourLiteracy to determine their understanding of their roles as ‘Cultural Ambassadors’. A fast-paced, exciting writing workshop followed as children took part in a LendMeYourLiteracy writing session, learning a range of strategies to improve their creative writing. Using stimulus of photographs and stories from the emirates, students worked together to create acrostic poetry and then complete a descriptive piece about a visit to Dubai.

Learning from Fatma’s stories, LendMeYourLiteracy strategies and the culture-rich setting of DIWC, the students produced some remarkable pieces of writing. As part of the Cultural Ambassadors workshop, students’ work has now been published on http://lendmeyourliteracy.com/lmyl-cultural-ambassadors-workshop/

As ‘Cultural Ambassadors’ students will now use the online publication of their writing to share their learning about UAE culture with their school communities.

Schools that participated in the workshop are Jumeirah English Speaking School (Arabian Ranches), GEMS Royal Dubai School, Al Diyafah High School, Jumeirah Primary School, Foremarke School, Deira Private School, Uptown Primary School, Dubai English Speaking School, Deira International School, Star International School, Al Twar, Pristine Private School and American Academy in Al Mizhar
