A Distance Learning Evaluation (DLE) is set to begin by mid-May for all UAE public and private schools amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Dubai's Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) has posted introductory information about the evaluation initiative on its 'Safety at Schools' webpage.
The DLE has been developed to create shared expectations of distance learning for schools, parents and students and to provide educational institutions with feedback in order to help them improve its key aspects.
Teams from Ministry of Education (MoE), KHDA, Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) and Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA) interviewed principals and teachers at public and private schools across the UAE to discuss the implementation of distance learning by their institutions, and to gain an understanding of how it can be improved.
Apparently, evaluation criteria and processes were developed and piloted with a number of public and private schools earlier and insights gained during these pilot evaluations were also used for formulating yardsticks.
Scales for evaluations
DLE is adopting a three-pronged approach for these evaluations, which mainly entail students' distance learning and wellbeing, teaching and monitoring of students' learning and leading and managing students' learning.
Each school evaluation will be conducted remotely and is expected to take approximately five hours.
It will further include online meetings with the principal and senior leadership team, as well as remote observation of lessons.
Schools will be intimated before these evaluations are conducted. Results of the assessment will also be shared with them.
The distance learning programme that began in March this year will extend until the summer break.
