While being kind to the environment is a reward in itself, Sharjah children and schools stand a chance to win up to Dh30,000 for their efforts in taking care of the Earth.
The Bee’ah School of Environment, an initiative of waste management company Bee’ah, opened nominations for the Sharjah Environment Awareness Award on Tuesday, which seeks to honour Sharjah schools’ environmental protection.
Now in its third year, the Bee’ah School of Environment has already rewarded 18 schools for their outstanding efforts and involvement in preserving natural resources, reducing waste disposal, conserving water and protecting biodiversity in the emirate. Meera Taryam, manager of Bee’ah Awareness and Education, said that the Bee’ah School of Environment would award 12 more schools and students based on such things as environmentalism, and science and art projects.
The awards will also recognise an outstanding teacher and an outstanding student for their environmental enthusiasm and impact on their society: “Today, we want to increase the number of schools to show their advocacy for the environment and invite ambitious and talented teachers and students to participate in the awards by utilising their creativity and educational resources to give back to their environment,” she said.
In the past editions, more than 60 different schools and nurseries participated in the search for ambitious school projects and talented teachers and students. Taryam said Bee’ah expects more participants this edition to showcase their knowledge and creativity in sustainable living.
Each of the winning schools will receive cash prizes of Dh30,000 for first place and Dh15,000 for the second place, along with a prestigious award trophy and certificate of recognition for their sustainable achievements. The winners will be announced at a closing ceremony on the occasion of the World Environment Day on June 5, 2013.
