Put together by the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) and Abu Dhabi Polymers Company (Borouge), the programme is part of the Sustainable Schools Initiative.

“The Sustainable Schools Initiative was immensely successful and students across the UAE showed great interest and passion in protecting the environment,” said Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, secretary-general of EAD. “The Sustainable Campus Initiative ... will further empower students to make positive environmental impacts and advocate for a sustainable future.”

During the pilot phase of the programme, the EAD will teach students how to assess their campus’ environmental footprint and develop an action plan to reduce it.

The initial phase has 25 students participating from four universities: Zayed University; Higher Colleges of Technology – Women’s College in Khalifa City; Higher Colleges of Technology – Men’s College in Madinat Zayed; and Higher Colleges of Technology – Women’s College in Ruwais.

The focus is on five priority areas: Water, waste, energy, climate change and sustainable use of land. Each university team chose one priority area and received Dh15,000 to run their project.

“This ... initiative is in line with our commitment to sustainability and social responsibility,” said Abdulaziz Al Hajri, CEO of Borouge.
