Students across the world are being invited to contribute their ideas by submitting essays on sustainable education as the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development comes to a close this year.

The Trust for Sustainable Living, International Schools Essay Competition, will encourage students to think about the fundamental importance of education in achieving a sustainable future.

How to enter

> International Schools Essay Competition: Contest entries have to be submitted by a registered Teacher Champion. For each category, schools are invited to submit up to 30 essays online. Entries should be a maximum of 400 words for primary students (aged 7 to 11) and a maximum of 600 words for secondary students (aged 11 to 17).

> Schools Sustainability Challenge: All video entries must be uploaded to YouTube and the resulting YouTube link needs to be registered on the Trust for Sustainable Living online entry form by the school’s nominated Teacher Champion. Only one video entry will be permitted per school For more information go to: www.livingrainforest.org/explore/schools-debate.

“The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) was charged with leading the UN’s efforts, producing an International Implementation Scheme for the decade. Since then, different nations have attempted to develop sustainability education programmes,” says Karl Hansen, Director for the Trust for Sustainable Living.

This year, the charity is introducing a new competition — The Schools Sustainability Challenge.

Winners will be announced at the International Schools Debate to be held in the UK from July 7 to 10 next year. The grand prize winner of the International Schools Essay Competition (plus teacher champion and parent) will receive a free trip to the International Schools Debate, while trophies will be awarded to the first five winners in each category. The winning school in the Schools Sustainability Challenge will win a trophy, together with a cash prize of £500.
