A four-day "Study in Japan" informational event recently took place alongside traditional cultural activities in Abu Dhabi. Organised by the Japan International Cooperation Center (JICE), Educational Development Office Abu Dhabi-Japan, the event was aimed at promoting Japan as an emerging international study destination for Emirati nationals and UAE residents who are seeking internationally recognised tertiary qualifications in country that offers unique traditional and sub-cultural experiences.
International students at Japan's educational institutions have been increasing year-on-year, with the latest statistics showing a total of 184,155 students from around the world choosing to study in Japan in 2014; an increase of 9.5 per cent compared to the number of international students in 2013. Among these, students from the Middle East numbered 1,450 in 2014 with an increase of 11.6 per cent.
Tokuya Kanamori, Representative of Education Development Office Abu Dhabi (EDO), said: "Japan continues to proactively welcome students from the UAE and Middle East to further their education in a wide variety of disciplines, providing them with not only excellent academic training and internationally respected qualifications, but with unique cultural experiences that can only be experienced in Japan. Within a safe, welcoming, respectful and nurturing environment, international students to Japan can pursue their academic goals while at the same time experience unique cultural and sub-culture interests. We are happy to see the number of Emirati nationals choosing to study in Japan increasing, and to encourage this we are also providing a number of scholarships to further support this trend."
Among the tertiary educational institutions are Nagasaki University, Tokushima University, Ritsumeikan University and International University of Japan.
Additionally, a number of unique cultural experiences were highlighted such as traditional Japanese tea ceremony, kimono wearing, and Japanese woodcut printing.
