Some Indian schools in the UAE have announced Sunday as a holiday for the 71st Indian Republic Day.
Dubai's Indian High School has cancelled its classes, but will be holding a celebration in honour of the day.
The consul-general of the Indian consulate in Dubai will be the chief guest of the event and more than 2,000 students are expected to participate.
The New Indian Model School in Sharjah has also issued a holiday for Sunday. "This is to inform you that Sunday, the 26th January, will be a holiday on account of the Indian Republic Day. However, the office will function from 8am to 1pm. The classes will resume on Monday," a circular from the school said.
Though, one school has cancelled the holiday to compensate for the time lost during the recent heavy rains in the country.
The GEMS Our Own Indian School said in a circular: "Kindly note that 26th January will be a regular working day for the school in order to compensate for academic time lost because of inclement weather conditions. There will be special assemblies on this day and all students are encouraged to come in white Indian attire. Do note that all students will be dispersed by the 1.45pm transport and the school office timings will be from 7.30am to 1.30pm."
