Before handing that termination letter, remember that most people don't wake up deciding to underperform

Professor Abdelrahim Mohammed Al Ameen, President, Al Ghurair University (AGU), said: “The mind-boggling pace of change in the contemporary world of work means knowledge and skills are becoming outdated more rapidly than before. It needs to be continually refreshed, renewed and replaced.”
Speaking at the university’s Career Fair, he advised students to take control of their career goals and aspirations. “The most important thing one can do is to remember that developing the employability is one’s own responsibility to a far greater extent than in the past. If one does not take control of his own career development, it is highly unlikely that anyone else will.”
Recruitment experts speaking at the fair shared common failures of job seekers. One major reason is the ‘tunnel vision approach’, where job seekers do not look at the big picture of emerging career opportunities.
“Job seekers apply for jobs that are advertised publicly and never bother about those which do not appear in the media which get filled up by those whose CVs have already been in the database loop,” said Emad Samir Kalda, HR Emaratisation Development, UAE Exchange. He said job seekers who rely solely on the job portals or classified jobs sections are not doing full justice to their job search and advised them to tap into the ‘hidden job market’ and unlock its job potential.
“When looking for a job, the three most important things are: Contacts, contacts and contacts,” said Ahmed Al Mulla, head of Public Relations, ETA Facilities Management. Advising students to use social media to connect with people, he suggested students to use LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook, to build a network and connect with potential employers.
Nour Younis from InternsME stated that an extension of the social media tools is the use of Blackberry Messenger and Whatsapp status updates on smartphones. “The idea is to let others know ... what you are looking for, and your friends may just respond with what they are aware of. ‘Word of mobile’ has taken over the ‘Word of mouth’ in the job search campaign.”
